Thomas Dempsey, Mariah's brother

One of the enduring mysteries is what happens to Thomas Dempsey, great-grandmother Mariah's brother. We know he comes to the U.S. with his mother and many of his siblings when his father Bernard does in 1871. We also know he pays for the plot for the burial of his mother Catherine Jennings Dempsey in Brooklyn in 1896.

And, we know his returns to Ireland at some point, as he is mentioned in an obituary as surviving his brother John in 1929.

So, is this him, Oct 20th, 1895?

His father is listed as Bernard, mother as Catherine Daly. But, Thomas 'makes his mark' so is not reading what the priest writes.

Witness is Martin Dempsey, again another common name, but that is the name for one of Thomas's brothers. The other witness is Deliah (Deila) McGrail.

Thomas's brother Martin marries Rose McGrail! (their daughter, Anna, marries Jerome Nash).

So, is it him?

next trip - Holy Cross

From  this, we found that Helen O'Grady is buried at Holy Cross in Brooklyn as well:

https://family-ogrady.blogspot.com/2021/08/helen-ogrady-daughter-of-martin-and.html

They have a search engine:

https://www.ccbklyn.org/locate-a-loved-one/

So why isn't Katherine Regan O'Grady buried with her daughter?

Because her sister is:

No idea if there's a stone, so we need to find out!

Also note, I've been adding some of the sites we visited to findagrave.com. For example:

gravesites - Thanks John!

First stop was Gates of Heaven cemetery, Hawthorne, NY:

Grand Aunt Nelly O'Grady Clancy and her husband, as well as children Charles, Geraldine, and Geraldine's husband Nick Drohan.

The neighboring plot is Grand Aunt Kitty O'Grady Sherwood and some of her family:

This is in a beautiful spot on the side of the hill, looking down into the river valley.

Next we went to in Yonkers, St Mary's cemetery.

Uncle Frank and Aunt Betty are in her family's plot (Section M, plot 10, grave 8):

Across the driveway from them is the Masseo/O'Grady plot, where Uncle John, Aunt Minnie and their daughter Joan are buried:

Note that most graveyards have the plot #s etched in the stones ... most in St Mary's don't have that!

Just north in the same cemetery (St Jude's section) is Uncle Eddie McCallion and Aunt Jean:

And in the same cemetery are Grandmother Katherine Regan O'Grady, her daughter Aunt Katherine and her husband Steve Rudy:

After a quick tour of Bronxville, we headed to Calvary cemetery in Queens.

We visited Nan & Pop's graves in section 42, and headed to section 43:

This is Pop's brother Michael, who emigrated right after him in 1911 with his wife Catherine Sheridan and daughter Annie. He has two more daughters in the US before his is killed in a trolley accident in 1913. He is the grandfather of Fran Miller, among others.

(I crossed the O'Gradys and McCallions here, so will need to link this to the McCallion site are well)
