Henry Grady - Foxboro

(Great grandfather) Thomas's brother Henry lived in neighboring Foxboro. He marries Mary Jennings, 1863.

This is the original research:

Mary's baptism, 1840. Rare to find a clear one from 1840!

Their son Patrick, 1864:

Michael, born 1868:

Their daughter Catherine, 1871:

Sarah, born 1878:
Sarah emigrates to the U.S and dies young in 1915.

This pic from Sean McNeil's ancestry posts:
Martin McNeil, died 1925. His wife Catherine (O'Grady McNeil), died 1952. I've written to Sean, who said this is in the St. Joseph's cemetery in Castlerea. Thanks Sean!

more Dempseys

The name Laurence has appeared a lot in the Dempsey searches. I ignored this one initially because it was transcribed as "Cloonscleagh", but once you view the image you can see it is Cloonreliagh. (also, there is no townland of Cloonscleagh).

Aug 1, 1841, Bernard of Laurence Dempsey and Bridget Swift. Sps John Tormey and Beth Dempsey.

This can't be the Bernard that is the father of Mariah in 1854. But, there's another Bernard in Cloonreliagh at this time, just to make things confusing 180 years later!

And this one: July 22, 1843, Laurence of Larry Dempsey and Bridget Swift, Sps Celia Quinn.

I included the record above because it says: "C. Reliagh"

Bernard Dempsey - UK - Mariah's brother

Bernard Dempsey and Catherine Jennings' son Bernard is born 1862 and later moves to the UK. He marries Mary Nolan, 1886:

This is from Wendy DeRiancho. Of interest is that we (if you are reading this, you are part of 'we'!) are related to Wendy via Thomas Dempsey of Moorefield, who's daughter marries into the Dillon family. We're still not sure how that Thomas Dempsey is related to the Cloonreliagh Dempseys, but they are.

We are now even more closely related to Wendy: "He  (Bernard) married Mary Nolan in 1886 Liverpool, and he lists his father as Bernard as well on the marriage certificate.  They had Anne Dempsey.  Anne married Patrick Bohan.  Anne and Patrick's son, James, is the grandfather of a Dempsey match for me on MyHeritage! "

What is ALSO interesting to me is that Sean McNeil, descended from great-grandfather Thomas's brother Henry, and Wendy, descended from great-grandmother Mariah's brother Bernard, are BOTH very determined researchers of family history!

1891 UK census, Johnstone St, Bootle:

1901 UK census:

Baptism for son Bernard 1888, hard to read. Note latinized spellings for names ... how annoying!
"Bernardus Dempey, Mariae Dempsey", etc

Bernard, father,  dies 1909.
Here's his son, Bernard, 1911 UK census. 15 Hamlet St, Bootle:

Daughter Annie, 2 Johnstone St, Bootle:

Anne marries Patrick Bohan, 1926:

So great-great-grandfather Bernard dies 1871 at age 45 and leaves a family to scatter.
His son Bernard dies young, age 47 (?), and his family scatters. So sad ... !

This looks like Bernard Jr's son Bernard, born 1888/1889, leaving the ship SS Haverford after returning to port in 1913:
His address is 113 Deily Rd, Blte ... could be Bootle?

Thomas Dempsey - Mariah's brother?

We know from her siblings' obituaries in NYC that Mariah had a brother Thomas. (Why no obits in Irish papers at this time?). And we know that he stayed in Ireland.

From Baptism records we know the children of Bernard Dempsey and Catherine Jennings were:

Mariah / Mary  - born 1854 - stays Ireland

Patrick - 1855  from  Ballintubber records

Thomas - 1857 from Ballintubber records - stays Ireland

Brigid  - 1860

Bernard   - 1862 - to UK

Anne   - 1864

John  - 1865 - to US

Michael   - 1867

Martin  - 1868 - to US

Catherine   - 1870  - to US

So, somehow Bernard and Catherine were in Ballintubber for the birth of two of their children.

We don't know what happens to most of them, but we do know that Catherine, John, and Martin go to the US when their father Bernard dies in 1871. Bernard (Jr) goes to the UK.

Thomas stays in Ireland, but is NOT one of the MANY Thomas Dempseys in the Cloonreliagh area.

Did he marry and move to a different area?
Here's a Thomas Dempsey in 1911 census in Leitrim, born in Roscommon.

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Leitrim/Yugan/Annagh_Upper/648053/

Note, they are also present in the 1901 census in the same townland, but it does not note his birthplace as Roscommon.

I can't find the marriage record for their marriage, but Thomas's wife Bridget dies in 1916:

Thomas dies 1944. Francis Earley present at death. No mention made of a relationship to Thomas.

Note: Registration District for above is Carrick-on-Shannon.

John Dempsey (Brooklyn Dempseys) - Mariah's brother

Family tree I created via ancestry site (their tool is better than mine!):

1900 US census, Park Ave, Brooklyn. Is this him? This would be Mariah's brother.

1910 US census, Heyward St, Brooklyn:

The "9|5" column heading means 9 children born, 5 living.

1915 NY census, Heyward St again:

It looks like the surviving children are: Margaret, Edward, Julia, Catherine, and Mary. What happens to them?

1920 US census.  John emigrated 1883, Mary 1887:

Brooklyn Citizen newspaper, January 8, 1929:

He had more brothers than this, very confusing ...

and the only Thomas Dempsey we've seen is Bernard's brother ... unless ... ? Unless: obits at the time only list LIVING siblings. So, Bernard Dempsey dies 1926 in the UK, and would not get listed. What about other siblings? Already deceased?

1. John's son Edward, 1915 NY census, Franklin Ave, Brooklyn:

1920 US census, Bergen Ave, Brooklyn:

It looks like Edward's son John dies 1927; trying to locate records on that.

1930 US census, Nostrand Ave, Brooklyn:

1940 US census, E 39th St, Brooklyn:

Aunt-in-law?

Alice's maiden name:

Edward's WW1 draft card (1917):

WW2 draft card:

Contact is Mrs Jerome Thompson ... Edward's daughter, Marie Alice. She marries Jerome 1940.
His draft card:

Edward dies, 1950:

2. Julia (John's daughter) marries Sylvester Perry, 1940 US census, 90th Ave, Queens:

3. Margaret (John's daughter) marries John O'Keefe. 1940 census, 88th Ave, Queens:

Margaret's mother lives with them, since John has died 1929.
Their son John (1917-1986) serves in WW2:

Dillon/Dempsey of Moorfield

Sean McNeil put us in touch with Wendy DeRiancho. Wendy is related, via the Bernard & Catherine Dempsey tree, and we know this for certain from DNA matches.

Her family is from Moore/Morefield/Moorfield, the Dillon family property actually borders the graveyard where many of the Gradys are buried.

Marriage cert, Luke Dillon and Bridget Dempsey, 1874 (Coarsfield is a sub-townland of Moorfield):

Bridget's father Thomas is related to Bernard ... but how?

Thomas dies 1894, daughter Mary present:

This is Thomas's family, widow Mary as Head of Family:

1911 census:
