Bryan Dempsey 1832

Tithe Applotment Books -- "They were compiled between 1823 and 1837 in order to determine the amount which occupiers of agricultural holdings over one acre should pay in tithes to the Church of Ireland (the main Protestant church and the church established by the State until its dis-establishment in 1871)."

 http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004625896/004625896_00363.pdf

So, Bryan has to pay a fair amount (or unfair!) to the Church of Ireland, even though he is Catholic!

Notes: alternate spelling for Derreentighe as "Derreenatigue". Also, no Grady's present there (or, they did not own greater than one acre or arable land)

G1: John Regan and Ellen Gallagher

Martin O'Grady's wife was Katherine Regan. Her mother's maiden name was Gallagher ... need to research.
If she is from Cashelcolaun, that is in Castlemore parish:

Note: civil registration office for searches is Swineford for marriage cert, Castlerea for birth cert ... both for same town ... this reflects the townland moving to Roscommon.

This is their marriage, March 17, 1879:

This is Cashelcolaun/Castlecolane in Ballaghaderreen. Grandma Regan said she was from Mayo, but all the records are from Roscommon ... this is one of the townlands transferred from Mayo to Roscommon in late 1800s.

Catherine's birth cert, mother's maiden name mangled to Callaghan:

Catherine's sister Mary, born 1889:

1901 census:

This link for the image shows her as "Head of Family" ... has John died by this point?

1911 census:

Catherine has already left for US (marries Martin in 1910).

Ellis Island entry for Catherine in 1906:

Contact is "Cousin Mrs M(?) Regan. 52 Amity Street Brooklyn NY"

Ellen Regan dies 1932, her son John present (he later comes to US):

as far back as we can go? Bryan Dempsey

Martin Dempsey's marriage certificate in 1873 at age 30 listed his father as Brian Dempsey of Cloonreliagh. So, he is possibly born 1843.

Bernard dies 1871, age 45. Likely born 1826. Thomas dies 1902 at age 80 (these are always guesses in those times), so possibly born 1822.

Are these three brothers? Is Martin the youngest? And Bryan the father?

The image above is baptism cert from Nov 13, 1849 (from Finola):

First part is very hard to read:

"???  of ?? & Bd Dempsey"
The second part, though, could be key:
"sps Bryan and Bridget Dempsey. Recd at Cloonreliagh"

So, in 1849, there is a Bryan and Bridget Dempsey in Cloonreliagh, likely Martin's parents.

Martin's marriage 1873:

They have a son Bernard:

Nov 4th 1874; Bernard; father is Martin Dempsy, mother Sarah Dempsey Jennings of Cloonfad.

We've seen this before where the marriage cert says 'Celia', but the name that is used is 'Sarah' (strange!)

And a daughter Bridget, 1879:

new photos

new pics -- place them here until I figure out where to put them!

Great pic from Joanne: "Nellie O'Grady Clancy hamming it up in front of her Lexington Avenue brownstone with. I believe, MaryAnn & Jane Hart"

Annie Nash, with Geraldine's brothers (Harry Clancy on left (thanks Joanne), Charles Clancy on right) pic from Finola. Harry and Charles were Nelly Grady Clancy's sons, Annie Nash was John Dempsy's daughter (John was Mariah Dempsy's brother).

Michael Grady

We know from Thomas Grady and Mariah Dempey's marriage certificate from 1876 that her father's name was Bernard, and his father was Michael.

Plus, we know Michael rented land in Derreentiege from the Griffith's Valuation of 1857.

Plus #2, we know civil birth records only started around 1864, on pain of penalty for failing to register a birth.

So, on to church baptism records (and Finola's brave foray to search through them):

https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632060#page/66/mode/1up

Nov 10, 1848. "Martin of Michael Grady & Ellen Ganley. Sps Wm Fitzmorris. Derentighe"

Is this Thomas's father Michael?

June 20, 1852. "John of Michael Grady & Cath Waldron. Sps Maria Waldron. Dereentighe".

We think Thomas had a brother John (see Castlefield blog). How many Michael Gradys could there be in Derreentighe, a townland of 10 homes?

That might not be him, but this is:

Baptised Oct 25, 1852. "Thomas of Michael & Mary Grady. Sps Martin Commons & Maria ???, C.reliagh".

more Dempseys

 Bernard and Thomas's sister Catherine?

If so, kind of sad. Dies age 73 "Occupied workhouse Castlerea".

This is Martin, son of Brian Dempsey of Cloonreliagh .... Is Brian Bernard's and Thomas's brother?
Bernard was 40 or so in 1870 ... Martin is 30 in 1873 ... perhaps Martin is the brother and Brian their father?

More research needed ...

3/14/2021 update:

Michael Dempsey of Keyfield marries Kate Silk in 1908. I would have thought this was Thomas's grandson Michael, born 1877. But his father was Thomas's son Patrick (who moves to Keyfield), not Michael ... more mysteries!

John O'Grady Castlefield research

One of Thomas's brothers, Patrick?, lived in Castlefield, Galway (just across border) -- researching this.

To search Civil Records, the registration district/office is Glenamaddy, civil parish is Templetogher; parish is Ballymoe(?)

Is this them? Thomas was 50 or so in 1901 census ... perhaps this is a cousin? Perhaps John is Thomas's brother, not Patrick?

Patrick, born March 12, 1871. Father is John Grady, mother Catherine Govern Grady:

"Patrick Cunema nephew present at death" (thanks Finola).

Henry O'Grady Foxboro research

Foxborough O'Gradys are relatives. Is Henry Thomas's brother? Or cousin? Need more research ...

Henry Grady and Mary Jennings marriage April 13, 1863 (thanks Finola again!):

G2: Martin O'Grady and Katherine Regan (2/5/21 update)

Photo from Joanne:  Catherine Regan, their son John, Martin O'Grady

Katherine Regan (Catherine?) and her sister Mary:
From John: "The attached is a photo of Grandma O'Grady and her sister Mary....the only reason I know that is because it is in moms writing on the back of the photo.  The photo is dated August 7, 1904 or 1909 ....but that is not in moms writing."

From John, via Arlene: "To her best recollection grandma was one of 4 Regans. They were Katherine,  Mary , John and Patrick.

Mary,  the shorter sister in the photo , died at the age of 28 ...either of diphtheria or typhus ....if she did pass around 1918 at the age of 28 then she would have been born in 1890...as Grandma was born in 1886.....Mary would have been her younger sister .

Grandma married in 1910 and Uncle John was born in 1912, Dad in 1914, Aunt Kay in 1917 and Uncle Frank 1920."

Marriage cert (from Joanne/Martin):
