two mysteries

1. John Lyons said his mother Mary Kate Dempsey was niece to Mariah, that William his grandfather was Mariah's brother

2. what happens to the land Bernard farmed in Cloonreliagh? Why does it seem that William Dempsey (John Lyon's grandfather), owns the land in the 1901/1911 census?

I didn't realize these two mysteries were related! At first I thought there must be two Williams, one each of brothers Thomas and Bernard. Too simple!

Here's the steps (as I see them):

1. Bernard dies in 1871, leaving his family to scatter. Most go to the US, son Bernard goes to the UK, son Thomas goes elsewhere in Ireland. Only Mariah stays behind in Derreentighe, except ...

2. eldest son Patrick takes over Bernard's farm.

3. Patrick marries Mary Waldron, 1879:

4. Patrick dies young. When?

5. Mary Waldron Dempsey remarries in 1887, to her husband's cousin, William Dempsey (son of Thomas):

Note Mary's father in both is John Waldron. In second cert, she and William are both listed in Cloonreliagh, William because he was living with his father Thomas, Mary because she is on Patrick's land (now her land).

6. Mary Waldron Dempsey (to the second power now), dies 1916:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1916/05228/4447239.pdf

7. Mary's widow, William, remarries, this time to Mary Griffin in 1917:

8. Mary Kate Dempsey, John Lyons' mother, is born of this union.

Mystery #1:

So, at some point at #5, John's grandfather William (Mariah's cousin), could be loosely considered Mariah's brother-in-law, as he is married to the widow of Mariah's brother. This is a stretch, but William's wife is Mariah's sister-in-law. But William is NOT her brother.

Even then, it is William's second wife, Mary Griffin, who is Mary Kate's mother, NOT the one who was Patrick's widow.

In reality, the closest William and Mariah are is cousins (William's father Thomas is brother to Mariah's father Bernard).

Mystery #2: William, Thomas's son, inherits his uncle Bernard's land via marrying Patrick's widow.

Phew!

G2/G3: Dempsey - Eagle

From Wendy Deriancho, who is trying to piece together the story of Sarah/Celia Dempsey, born to Thomas Dempsey and Bridget Monaghan about 1855/1857 in Cloonreliagh.

Sarah marries Thomas Eagle in Philadelphia ? Thomas Eagle / Egal was a native American, working as as an army scout, and is accidentally killed by his own side.

They have a daughter, Sarah, born Philadelphia, but moves to Ireland with her mother.

Mother is 25, daughter is 2.

Father Henry Eagle (Egal) dies young.

This is Henry and Sarah's son, Thomas, born 1887:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/birth_returns/births_1887/02556/1945488.pdf

Note father, Henry Eagle, resides in "Brookland, America".

Sarah dies shortly thereafter, age 31, in the Castlerea workhouse:

https://civilrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/images/deaths_returns/deaths_1888/06165/4761954.pdf

This leaves her children Sarah and Thomas in quite a sad state. This is Sarah, age 7, begging for alms in Castlerea in 1894:

" ... to be delivered ??? industrial school ... "

Wendy also found out that the daughter Sarah started using Helen as a first name, and Thomas sometimes went by John Thomas. John Thomas, orphaned at age 1, was raised by the Franciscan Brothers in Ireland.

Sarah emigrates to the US in 1903 and stays with her aunt Margaret Dempsey (who married James Skelly). At some point she sends back to Ireland for her brother Thomas ...  more to come.

(John) Thomas, 1901 census:

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Roscommon/Coolougher/Cloonconra/1664926/

Need to research if Higgins are related? Or does he find a home there via the Franciscans?

Sarah emigrates back to the US, April 24th 1903 (she is older than 18):

Intended address is 363 Sacket St, Brooklyn, her "Aunt Mrs ? Skelly", this is her aunt Margaret Dempsey, who married James Skelly:

Thomas's entry, May 13, 1906, now using John Thomas Egal:

Intended address is his sister Sarah, 81 Douglas St, Brooklyn

This is Thomas, dies 1967:

Birth date is wrong, and mother's name is Mary, but there are not a lot of Eagles/Egals born in Ireland in that timeframe (exact count: 1).

Dempsey family info, from PJ Farrell

PJ had sent me this a while ago, and just realized I didn't post it. (I'll need to add to a central Dempsey blog ... TBD)

This is the family tree he developed:

Marriage of Patrick Dempsey and Anne Guest, 1846:

Both Martin and Patrick show their fathers as Brian/Bryan.

Birth of Thomas & Bridget's daughter Margaret Dempsey, 1865:

G1/G2: Martin Grady 1902

Well, this is certainly interesting. Nov 21, 1902, Martin Grady of Foxboro is accusing Martin Grady of Derreentighe of Assault and Threatening Language:

In the 1901 census for Henry Grady of Foxboro, there's a Martin Grady listed as 'boarder' ... but is it actually his younger brother?

https://family-ogrady.blogspot.com/2021/02/foxboro-ogradys-research.html

If so, this is great grand uncle Martin being threatened by grandfather Martin!

At least they got along back then rather similar to how we get along now!

G1: James Grady - Keyfield - more

These first two are for poor rate (tax on landowners to provide poor relief):

This is for James Grady, but Kilcourse above is likely related. On the same date for Keyfield, Glynns are also listed.

More fun in 1901 between James Grady, Peter Kilcourse, and Thomas Silk (all related?):

1909 (imagine what our ancestors will be able to find out about us!):

G1: more on Thomas Grady (great grandfather)

I guess great-grandfather Thomas had a colorful life! This is in addition to the ones Sean McNeil found:

Feb 17, 1877:

Nov 23, 1878: Not sure what to make of this! Mary is likely related! Likely Thomas's mother!

at least Mariah is with him!

March 1884:

Mary again: "assault and throwing her out of her own house at Keyfield on the 16 March 1884 ... "

May 1886:

"cutting away a portion ... " ?

May 1888:

June 2, 1888:

It seems Thomas finally has paid enough fines for having a dog without a license, as he finally buy a license in 1899:

April 18, 1903:

G3: Philip Keown & Jane Harte

Jane Harte marries Philip Keown in April 1942. He was born in Ireland in 1907, and is killed March 1945 in Germany during WW2, and is buried at the Netherlands American Cemetery and Memorial:

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/56300482/philip-keown

This would have been typical for his unit, the 771st Tank Battalion:

Note '771' on left lower hull. 'C' on right lower would mean Charlie company; I'm trying to find roster to see which company Philip was in.

In Beffe, Belgium, there's a monument giving thanks to the US Army.

The blue plaque to the right says '771', indicating the tank belonged to the same 771st Tank Battalion.

This is the link to the after-action report for the 771st:

https://cgsc.contentdm.oclc.org/digital/collection/p4013coll8/id/3464/rec/1

Philip should be listed in here, but a large part of the document is hard to read.

According to this site, Philip was in A Company:

https://www.honorstates.org/index.php?id=330808

The above was sent to Jane in 1960 (by which time she had re-married), regarding Philip's burial in the Netherlands. Note under "Decorations" it says BSM and PH:

PH - Purple Heart, injured in combat

BSM - Bronze Star, impressive, but sad.

Jane, widowed, returning to NY from a visit to Ireland, 1947:

G0: Michael Grady and Mary Ganly

We need a better organization to this, not sure how exactly.

We know  (great grandfather) Thomas Grady's parents were Michael Grady and Mary Ganly, and that he had several siblings. Trying to gather all that evidence in one place!

We know of:

James -  Keyfield https://family-ogrady.blogspot.com/2021/02/g1-keyfield-ogradys-research.html

John - Castlefield https://family-ogrady.blogspot.com/2021/02/castlefield-ogradys-research.html

Henry - Foxboro https://family-ogrady.blogspot.com/2021/02/foxboro-ogradys-research.html

Thomas - Derreentighe https://family-ogrady.blogspot.com/2021/01/thomas-grady-and-mariah-dempsy-documents.html

Martin (1848-1935?) - scroll down

Patrick  - this is his baptism, Feb 16, 1846:

He marries 1869:

Patrick dies 1878:

Hard to make out the townland, but his father is Michael, deceased.

Moves to Grange?
If so, this is him, 1911 census (not present in 1901):

G2: Thomas Harte and Bridget Grady

I've been reminded lately that I don't have much on the Harte family. Part of this is because so much is known about the Hartes in my family! Another reason is that the Hartes don't appear in the 1901 or 1911 census, or in a lot of the civil records of the time period for most of this research (1860-1920) in their home townland, Cloondacarra.

I'm not sure why this is ... does Thomas Harte move in to the area around 1910, after the census?

Here's a start, their oldest child Jane born 1912:

I'll have to check this townland for other, earlier Hartes. Clooneykerney?

Registration District is Castlerea.

Their oldest son Thomas looks to be born in 1914. I'll have to send away for the actual image:

John, 1915:

Note, still in Cloonykerny.

Mary, born 1917:

Francis, 1919:

We know there were more: Bernard, Patrick ... 11 children?

So, my search had tended to be for Cloondacarra, but Cloonykerny is the key. 1911 census for Thomas's family:

1901 census:

Bernard and Martina stand to left of Grandpa with Martina' s brothers to right"

Jane Harte's US naturalization, 1929. Address is 1889 Lexington Ave, her aunt Nellie's home:

Test to see how this comes through. Start of Harte family tree:
