John Gready of Derreentighe, 1903 ... the correct one!

This is the right one!
We have a picture of John, at his death. I've hesitated posting it before, since it is ... could you call it spectral? Apparently his mother had it taken. It was not uncommon at this time to take a death picture, especially since photography was new, and if you never had a picture taken in life, at least you would take one at death. Anyway, I posted the pic at the end ... take this as I warning!

I  jumped the gun on finding the Leeds accident from 1900 (removed those articles), since I had looked for a long time for such evidence. But, John is alive and well in the 1901 census, so unlikely that it is him who died in 1900. That's why further research was needed and was able to find John above.

Also, the gravestone has a very specific date: July 4, 1903. Unlikely his mother confused that with Jan 12, 1900.

John Gready of Derreentighe, RIP:

The Durham Mining Museum has info on the Rotherham Main Colliery:

The site includes a list of those killed (66 at least!), including J Grady:

Rotherham Main Colliery was owned by John Brown and Co, shipbuilders, known for such ships as the HMS Hood and RMS Lusitania.

gems found by Sean McNeil

More to the story of Sean McNeil (connection through ancestry.com), but for now wanted to share some of the things he found and shared.

This one from 1864 shows James, Mary and Martin Grady from Derreentige and Henry Grady (Foxboro). More unfortunate circumstances (assault), but they are all together!

This one from 1869 has Henry Grady, James Grady and Thomas Dempsey (Bernard's brother) all caught out "walking" their unlicensed dogs on the same day.

From 1870 petty court session records. Henry Grady, James Grady (Keyfield), Martin Grady and Mary Grady - described as a widow so possibly this is their mother. The circumstances are unfortunate (assault and threatening), but this places them all together in May 1869:

James Costello-Catherine Dempsey (Mariah's sister)

Interesting mix, 1900 census. Walcott Street, Brooklyn:

James, his wife Catherine, and her brother John Dempsey. Did James and Catherine have a son Bernard? If so, what happened to him?

Costellos, 1905 census, Bronx, NY. Bigger image to help figure out the street name.

David Costello is the child Nellie Grady brings to the US from Ireland when she emigrates.

Catherine dies Sept 1932. From Brooklyn Times Union:

another reference to brother Thomas ...

Patrick Dempsey - WW1

Mariah's father Bernard (dies young, age 45 in 1871), had a brother Thomas, same townland. Thomas had a grandson Patrick (via his son Thomas and Bridget Quinn).

Patrick emigrates via Ellis Island (will post).

Patrick enlisted in the US Army in WW1, and shipped out on the Mauretania June 30 1918. He is a private, first class, in the new air service:

Patrick dies in 1977. He left the army as a Sergeant, First Class:

Patrick's daughter Margaret married John Farrell. Their son, PJ, still lives in the area and sent the pic above. Thanks PJ!

Michael Grady and Mary Ganly

So, we know there were two Michael Gradys in Cloonreliagh/Derreentighe late 1840s, early 1850s. One of them was Thomas's father.

I've written to Sean McNeil, contact via ancestry.com, as he has the OTHER Michael in his family tree. That is the Michael who is married to Catherine Waldron.

That would mean OUR Michael is married to Mary Ganly. What is the relationship between the two Michaels?

1846, "Pat of Michl Grady and Mary Ganly. sps Mary Flynn C.Reliagh"

Patrick marries, Dec 15, 1869:

Of course, if the other Michael has a son Patrick, we have no way to tell them apart!

Nov 10, 1848. "Martin of Michl Grady & Mary (Maria?) Ganley. Sps Wm Fitzmorris. Derentighe"

https://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000632060#page/82/mode/1up

And, of course, our Thomas:
Baptised Oct 25, 1852. "Thomas of Michael & Mary Grady. Sps Martin Commons & Maria ???, C.reliagh".

G1: James O'Grady Keyfield research

We think Thomas O'Grady (married to Mariah), had several brothers living nearby: Patrick, Michael, and James.  James served overseas in the British army, serving in India. (This was possibly with the Connaught Rangers, as they were drawn from this province).

If so, this may have been his family:

Same family, 1911 census:

James marries Bridget, 1866:

His father is Michael Grady. Is this the same Michael that is father to Thomas?

Son Martin, born 1870:
